The best selling guide to O'ahu... Oahu Revealed "Your books were the difference between a nice vacation and an incredible adventure! My wife and I just returned from our amazing two week trip to Oahu, Maui, Lanai... I truly felt sorry for the poor souls who obviously did not read your books and therefore were not really prepared for anything other than visiting the beach in front of their hotel and maybe hitting a few of the well-known attractions...My only request is that you move to Alaska and write a guidebook before our trip there next summer." |
The Equus (800) 669-7719 or (808) 949-0061 1696 Ala Moana Blvd. ![]() 68 rooms, pool, lanais on some, 24-hour business center, free continental breakfast, free hi-speed Internet access in the rooms, fridge (with separate freezer), coffee makers with free coffee daily, free local calls, free polo tickets (in season), free room safes, bbq. This 10-story building was renovated in 2008 and is now a “green” hotel (not the color, the consciousnesscleaning agents, recycling, efficient toilets, etc.). Rooms are well-furnished but not overly large; some have had the lanais removed to expand interior. The decor is a blend of Chinese, horses and polo and it works quite well. The owner was a professional polo player and is often seen around the hotel. Prints of historical photos from the Bishop Museum line the hallways showing the history of horses and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys). The balance of the abundant artwork is a mix of original photos and other works, all with the horse/polo theme. This hotel is not wheelchair accessible due to stairs at the entrance, and you won’t find many kids here either. Their weakest points are the tiny lobby and small pool, which is sandwiched between two buildings and a busy road and no laundry on site. Rooms on top two floors have soundproofed windows. Though not 100% effective, it’s worth it to spring for these. Their beds are unusually comfy with soft sheets and a variety of pillows to choose from. After visiting this property many times, it has grown on us for the lovingly decorated rooms and the warm aloha spirit of the attentive staff and owners, and they lowered the prices, too. If you need a desk, upgrade to an executive room. There are no bathtubs, and the shower ceilings feel low. Parking is $18. Rooms (280 sq. ft.) are $129$169. Suites (330660 sq. ft.) are $159$269. A block from the beach at the Hilton. Recent price adjustments and stellar service make them a Solid Gold Value. |
