Maui Revealed: "I just gotta say, what a fantastic book! The effort that went into it is almost hard to imagine!" |
Pioneer Inn (Best Western) (800) 457-5457 or (808) 661-3636 658 Wharf St.
34 rooms, pool, restaurant, free hi-speed Internet access in rooms, free local calls, coffee makers with free coffee daily, laundry is valet-only, no elevator (and no rooms on ground floor), no room safes. This is the oldest hotel on the island. Built in 1901, it’s right in the heart of downtown Lahaina. (That’s good for convenience, bad if you’re looking for peace and quiet at night.) The hotel was renovated in the late ’90s and is clean and well-tended. Lanais in all rooms, but they’re not private, so behave yourself. All the non-smoking rooms face the interior courtyard pool. You’ll have to park on Wainee and Dickenson and hoof it to your room, but it’s free. Once ensconced in your room, there is no better place to stay to feel the heart of Lahaina beat. They’re rarely full, so you can almost always get a room. Courtyard rooms are the quietest. Note that no rooms directly face the ocean. The original building of the hotel faces the ocean, but the rooms need updating and county permits (for historical buildings) are a bit trickyso for now, they sit empty. We like banyan the tree-facing rooms. You get a 15% discount at their restaurant. Rooms (227 sq. ft.) are $120$190, deluxe rooms (227 sq. ft.) are $189$199, suites (approx. 454 sq. ft.) are $185$215. Stick with the standard rooms; suites aren’t appreciably better. |
