Maui Revealed: "Your book is like the bible about Maui. That's what my husband and I started to refer to it as while we were there - "Honey, did you forget the bible!" It was the most comprehensive, well-written guidebook to Maui I've seen, and I bought them all, so I should know. The other books would just sit on the table and we'd keep your little book with us all the time, referring to it often for all our needs. It was a valuable tool... If we ever find ourselves thinking of heading back to the Hawaiian islands, know the latest edition of your books will be out first purchase when planning the trip." |
Staying in Ma'alaea As mentioned on page 129, we don't particularly recommend staying in Ma'alaea unless you're simply looking for a place to lay your head at night. It's the windiest place to stay on Maui and possibly in the whole state. Dust from sugar operations, smell from the landfill up-wind, and other reasons make it a questionable place to choose to stay. Many people come back year after year; others grumble of Ma'alaea's shortcomings. In this case we have to side with the grumblers. Price is the only thing that should lure you here, and prices range from $125-$285. Some pluses, however, include the central location (between West and South Maui), the awesome winds do tend to keep things cooler, they all have pretty nice views with three properties located on a sandy beach, and units here tend to be very well maintained. Ma'alaea Bay Rentals (800) 367-6084 or (808) 244-5627 has the most units here. Call them if you're set on staying in Ma'alaea. 5-night minimum. Some condos have washer/dryers in units and/or hi-speed Internet access, If you need those things, ask for them. They handle units at Makani a Kai, Hono Kai, Kana'i a Nalu and Ma'alaea Kai. We're choosing to devote the space we'd normally use to describe the nine resorts here to what we consider more viable accommodations elsewhere. That may anger some, but we only have so much space, and it doesn't make sense to use so much for Ma'alaea when you can do so much better at other locations. We will mention that your best bet is probably Island Sands (888) 997-2637 or (808) 244-0848 at 150 Hauoli St. A nice, clean, 84-unit building with rates for 1/1 units (670 sq. ft.) at $135-$198. 2/2 units (1,010-1,227 sq. ft.) are $190-$256. Summer is cheaper and windier. It's not on the sandy beach area, but it's a short walk. 4-night minimum. The other condos in the area are mostly long term.
