The best selling guide to the Big Island... Hawaii "I'm a self-planner. I love travelling, researching and planning my trips...I buy all sorts of guides for fear of missing out...found your books online at Amazon and got one for Big Island and one for Maui...this was to be my 3rd trip...I wanted something different. I LOVED your books and read the big island cover to cover and could almost quote it. At one point my husband was like, "must you bring that book again?" Yet the day I wasn't reading from it, he's like, "what's next?" So, it was money well-spent!!!!" |
Manago Hotel (808) 323-2642 82-6155 Mamalahoa Hwy (11) ![]() 64 rooms. Built in 1917 by a Japanese mail-order bride and her husband (with an initial investment of $100) as a restaurant with futons for their customers to sleep on (the rate was $1 a night back then), this still has the feel of old Hawai'i. No phones or tvs in the rooms (people congregate in the lobby at night to watch tv) and no laundry facilities. Nice folks abound here; very family feel. They tried to upgrade the rooms with tvs, but the regular customers balked. Some rooms have private baths (for $59-$78)--spring for one if you can--others share a bath ($33-$36). Upper floors have good views as does the back building. And you'll be happy to know the place is spotless. Ten miles south of Kona in Captain Cook on Hwy 11. Their restaurant (closed Mondays) has outstanding pork chops made in an old cast iron skillet. |
